Statement on School Safety Bill Becoming Law by FCSBM President Bridget Ziegler

March 9, 2018

Tallahassee, Florida

The Florida Coalition of School Board Members applauds the school safety provisions in SB7026 which Governor Rick Scott signed into law today.

We are grateful that the Florida Legislature was able to craft a plan addressing school safety in such a short period of time and in such a transparent process by moving it through committee. While our individual members may or may not agree with every provision in Senate Bill 7026, collectively a majority of our members agree that those areas directly impacting the operation of our public schools are being addressed and that children will benefit by this legislation.

We appreciate the additional resources for mental health funding, which we know to be an effective remedy for preventing future tragedies, as well as the school hardening funding to help keep our students and staff safe.

In the provisions of staffing, we appreciate the additional resources, as well as the flexibility of local boards to implement the Guardian program with their local law enforcement partners or not to participate at all if that is their plan.

This is a step in the right direction and we appreciate the solution-oriented partnerships with the Florida House and Senate. We acknowledge that the solutions will be crafted and implemented on the local level and our members remain committed to this process so that every student feels safe. We are encouraged by robust dialogue and careful consideration given by our representatives in Tallahassee and on School Boards around the state to this important issue. Together we will make Florida safer for our children.
